Lesson Levels – Intermediate 1

Dressage Skills

  • Correctly warm up and cool down a horse
  • Walk/trot transitions are prompt
  • School figures (figure 8, half circle-reverse, serpentine at trot)
  • Confirm sitting trot
  • Introduce half halts at all gaits
  • Develop proper connection at walk and trot
  • Full seat canter departs from trot
  • Canter without stirrups
  • Introduce free walk
  • Correct use of dressage whip
  • Ride USDF walk-trot dressage tests

Jumping Skills

  • Grids of 2-3 fences at max 2’ (x-rails first, then verticals)
  • Single verticals, max 2’
  • Canter single fences, max 2’
  • 4 ground poles on a 20m circle (may raise later)
  • Introduce jump position in the field at walk/trot/canter

Unmounted Skills

  • Types of feed and forage
  • Distances between jumps and types of show jumps
  • Longeing a horse
  • Various disciplines and rules for showing
  • Show prep of horse (bathing, braiding, clipping)
