Mary Ann Sabin
General Manager; Jr./Young Rider Coordinator
Mary Ann has been riding since a child. She hails from Rhode Island, where she rode and
taught show jumping, hunt seat equitation, hunt seat over fences, pleasure horse, and
Dressage. Mary Ann started and coached for 4 years a children's show team that campaigned
in Rhode Island. She is a winner of 38 combined State and New England Championships and
14 Reserve Championships. She has also instructed students in equine training and equine
showmanship. In the Philippines, she provided formal training in Dressage and hunt seat over
fences before coming to Reddemeade in 1992. Since coming to Reddemeade, Mary Ann has
campaigned several EquiShare horses at First and Second Level. She coordinates the
Junior/Young Riders Dressage Teams.
Melissa Smith
Asst. Manager, Feeder and Office Staff Coordinator; EquiShare Liason; HIT Program
Director; Summer Camp Co-Director
Melissa started riding at age 7 and has competed in Dressage, Show Jumping and Eventing
competitions and Gymkhanas. She taught at Donneybrook Stables in South Africa and
attended the equestrian studies program at Praetoria Technikon. In 1998 she moved to
America and attended the equestrian studies program at Averett University, where she was on
the Dressage, Hunter and Eventing teams. Melissa is currently eventing her Paint gelding
Smarty. She coordinates the Feeders and Office Staff, and is the EquiShare Liason. She is also
a certified equine massage therapist.
Jessica Schaberg
USEA Certified Instructor Level 1-T; Outreach Coordinator
Jessica is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Findlay, with degrees in
Equestrian Studies, Equine Business Management, and Small Business/Entrepreneurship. She
has also been a working student for Olympic eventer Phyllis Dawson. She has completed a
Training 3-day Event with her mare, Seattles Rugged Star, and is currently competing Calm in
the Storm at Novice & Training levels. She also is currently competing Delta Tango, her
Thoroughbred gelding, at Third level.
Steve Young
Senior Instructor
Steve Young came to Reddemeade in July of 1996 at which time he was a CHA clinic instructor,
an avid Jumper, earning the high-point jumpers award in '93 the Expressway Hunter-Jumper
Circit, and was studying dressage under Walter Zettle at Houghton College. Steve graduated
from Houghton College with a degree in outdoor recreation in the spring of 1996. Since then
Steve has trained several horses through second level in dressage and helped in the training
and progress of numerous favorite jumping horses at Reddemeade.
Katrina Benson Dodd
Coach - Junior Equitation League Teams; CHA Assistant Clinic Instructor; Summer
Camp Co-Director
Katrina grew up in Bergen, Norway where she started riding at the age of 8. Her teaching
career began at 14 and she progressed quickly – achieving a Daily Manager Position only four
years later at Hjortland Ridesenter, a riding school in Bergen. She formally trained in the UK for
ABRS (Association of British Riding Schools) near London under Julian Marczak (ABRS
Chairman and co-author of the official ABRS manual) and Karen Bush (author of Successful
Jumping). In 2004, Katrina moved to the US and began riding at Reddemeade a year later. She
graduated from Reddemeade's Instructor Training Program in the spring of 2006 and currently
trains with Jane Seigler, Ulf Wiltfang and Katherine Rizzo. Katrina is also CHA Level 4 certified
for English and Jumping, and is an Assistant Clinic Instructor for CHA.
JuLiana Hutchings
Juli grew up in the Southeastern hills of Pennsylvania and was in the saddle before she could
walk. She started eventing at seven years old and pony clubbed for seven years. She
discovered her passion for teaching when she was 14, and during high school held her own
lesson program, taught clinics to pony clubs, and ran an eventing camp for four summers. In
2007 Juli represented Area II in the North American Junior Young Rider Championships (called
the junior olympics) for the one star in eventing. She has since competed internationally at the
two star level including Bromont, Jersey Fresh, and Fair Hill International. Juli has also shown
through the 2nd level in dressage and hopes to get her "r" judges license in the years to come.
She graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts and is the author of
the best selling novel, A Horse to Remember.
Jessica Harting
Jessica began riding at Reddemeade in 2001 at the age of 11. Along with becoming a skilled
rider, she also became a working student, feeder and groom. She has been a student of
Melissa Smith since 2002. Jessica graduated from Reddemeade's Instructor Training Program
in the spring of 2006. After graduating from high school in June 2007, she will enter the
University of Maryland in the spring of 2008, studying Equine Science so she can one day
become an Equine Veterinarian.
Suzanne McDonald
Lucca Rockhold
Lucca started riding at the age of nine in Denmark, Europe. There she competed in dressage
and show jumping on her pony, Russian Ballet, and later her Danish Warmblood, Hoejgaards
Romantica. In 2005 she moved to the US and started riding at Reddemeade. In 2008 she
bought her Hanoverian mare, Fiesta, whom she presently trains and competes in Dressage.
Lucca currently trains with Steve Young and Ulf Wiltfang. She has taken clinics with Walter Zettl,
Linda Zang, and Jessica Jo Tate. Lucca completed Reddemeade’s instructor training program
in the summer of 2009, and is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree at the University of
Maryland in Animal Science.
Nancy Schechtman
Nancy has been riding since 1989 and teaching horseback riding at Reddemeade since 1999.
She has experience in Hunters, Dressage and Eventing. In addition to teaching and competing,
she also enjoys fox chasing with some of the local hunt clubs and riding sidesaddle. She has
even hunted and evented aside! She continues to compete her off the track thoroughbred
gelding, Manzotti Law (Vanya), Eventing him at the Training level and showing him at First
Level Dressage. She has also begun to work with a new horse, For Pete's Sake (Petey), a
Trakehner gelding, with whom she hopes to compete in both Dressage and Eventing.
Peggy Sweitzer
Peggy began her riding career in January of 2002 at Reddemeade. She immediately joined the
Horsemasters-in-Training program and currently has special responsibility for the care of our
retired and laid up horses. She rides under the tutelage of Steve Young and Melissa Smith.
Peggy is a graduate of Reddemeade's Instructors Training Program and began teaching
lessons in the fall of 2008. During the day she works as a physical education teacher and a
physical fitness instructor.
Katie Martin
Kitty has been with Reddemeade since 2000. Having tried a bit of everything, she settled into
dressage and hunt seat equitation. She is one of the coaches of the Hunter Jumper Team.
Having competed hunters throughout high school and college, she still competes her pony,
Dixon (a former Reddemeade school horse) as a hunter as well as competing in dressage. She
is currently in college and majoring in American Sign Language.
Elizabeth Carole Alcoba, ‘Carole’ : CHA 1 Instructor certification English and Western
With a Masters in Teaching from Trinity College, 25+ years experienced in a variety of
instructional methods, a background as a classroom teacher, teacher specialist and school
administrator, Carole enjoys teaching children, adolescents and adults of all ages. She has
taught private riding lessons for the past 3-4 years. Her family owned horses, with a polo player
brother and hunter/jumper sister, Carole rode Western and belonged to her high school riding
club. During college she learned English riding in exchange for working as an exercise rider.
After raising a family, 11 years ago she returned to the saddle at Reddemeade plunging herself
into privates, groups and many clinics. Not long afterward she acquired an OTTB mare and
later an Arabian which she has shown in low level eventing and dressage. She has been a
member of the Days End Farm Horse Rescue Volunteer Training Team, has performed a few
Natural Horsemanship exhibitions, but the primary focus the last few years has been dressage.
